My Island Roots is a dream that I have of being able to provide much needed school supplies and computers and many other nessesaties thats needed in the classroom for the education of our children.
When I was young growing up in the village. the supplies are given at the begining of the school year only if your prents are able to afford it. It consist of mostly two notebooks 2 pencils and nothing more, though out the year, the kids including myself will be on our knees in the back of the school house looking for broken leads that would get sweep outside so we can fasten it to our stick shape pencils that we made out of wood. as for books when we run out we basicly go through the notebook and erase everything else and rewrite on the same notebook. lunch is not provided for by the goverment so during lunch time, the kids will go into the woods for any fruits or coconuts they can find to eat until the end of the school day. That was the in the 80s, I have since moved to American Samoa then migrate to the USA and I went their for a visit in 2004 and its the same since I left and it hurts me to think of my kids growing up in the states getting everything they need and school supplies is so easily assesible to our kids here. and I am now commited to help those kids to make sure they have the same change of going to school in the 21st century with much needed school supplies
